Some fan-readers are die hard secret baby people, but I'm all about the royalty. Imagine my complete fan-girling glee then when I found a book (who knew those Facebook sponsored ads were actually working?) that had all the things I loved: a strong, smart, sarcastic heroine; a hot and articulate prince; and a hilarious case of mistaken identity. The book starts with a tongue-in-cheek letter from a Nigerian prince (so to speak), congratulating Naledi on being found and asking for some minimal identification, just a scan of her IDs, her passport, her social security number—I mean, who wouldn’t just submit that paperwork right back to a prince? However, Naledi doesn’t have time for any of it. After several emails of this variety, Prince Thabiso decides to meet her in person, make her tell him no to his face. However, when he confronts her, she mistakes him for a new hire at her part-time job and he doesn’t correct her. Instead, he plays along, intrigued to not play the prince for a few hours but to get to know his long-lost fiancé without the trappings of his wealth and prestige.

Of course, this all backfires spectacularly…and actually there IS a fire, because Prince Thabiso is the worst waiter ever. Not that he can explain why he has no skills in this area. Undeterred by his knack for catastrophe and Naledi’s complete lack of interest in him, Prince Thabiso finds other ways to be in her immediate area of residency, and slowly but surely, he begins to win her over with his own charm. Except now he realizes he still hasn’t told her who he really is—and she’s going to be ticked when she finds out.

This is not a new storyline, and we all know what’s going to happen, but the way Alyssa Cole is able to tell the story, this trope feels fresh, new, and believable. The characters are multi-dimensional, smart, sexy, and human. If you’re looking at this book, you likely read romances—and I read a lot of them. I’m telling you: this was well-executed on many levels in terms of character, plot, dialogue, setting, and sizzle.

A Princess in Theory is an adult contemporary romance following Naledi Smith. Naledi is currently in graduate school studying epidemiology while also working a couple jobs. She doesn't have time to focus on anything but school and work. One day she receives an email saying she's betrothed to an African prince. Since Naledi is an orphan and has been in and out of the foster system most of her life, she doesn't think it's possible and someone is trying to scam her. However it turns out that it's true and Prince Tabiso is hoping to meet her while in the United States for business. When Thabiso shows up at Naledi's job she mistakes him for a new coworker. Thabiso decides to play along in order to get to know Naledi without revealing who he is.

I really enjoyed the journey these two characters went on throughout the novel. Naledi starts in a place where she is working towards her desired career while overworking herself to not take care of herself but not be seen as a specific stereotype. She has grown used to not having anyone to rely on so she has made it so it's hard for anyone to get close to her. On the other hand, Thabiso comes from a place of privilege. Being the sole heir to the throne of Thesolo he has grown up in the spotlight with everything he could ever want. He still isn't completely happy because being the sole heir there's a lot everyone expects of him, especially his parents.

Throughout the story the characters had to learn about their own faults and how to overcome them while getting to know each other. There were times when the story was slow for me. Also, I wish there was more time spent in Thesolo with Naledi getting to learn more about where she's from and spending time with her living family. Overall I really enjoyed this story and now want to read more from Alyssa Cole.
The premise was perfection. Especially with black panther coming out. I was looking toward to an uncolonized African nation with a almost Disney like romance, but that's not what this was at all. The characters weren't relatable or likeable. All of these amazing things were happening to our protagonist but she had little to no real reaction. The prince was a little childish but he was actually OK. He was one of the only bright spots of this messy book. The ending was rushed and didn't feel complete. I had to double check to make sure it was over. I was pissed and wish I could have gotten my money back. I was looking toward to reading more of her work, but not anymore. It was just a pile of disappointment.
